Chesapeake Football Bounces Back From Slow Start

The Bayhawks go for their third straight win Thursday at Loch Raven.

Chesapeake’s football team appears to have found its stride under first-year coach Rocco Bruno.

The Bayhawks have now won two straight games following their 16-13 win Friday at Sparrows Point. (2-3) tries to get back to .500 at 7 p.m. Thursday when it plays at Loch Raven.

Bruno, , said he is proud that his players never quit despite the rough start, which included losses to , Archbishop Curley and New Town.

“I tell the kids 'You are improving each and every week and we will be a force to be reckoned with, but we will take it one game at a time,' " Bruno said.

Against Sparrows Point, running backs Pascal Tshiams and Malcolm Dowery rushed for 55 and 77 yards, respectively. Defensively, James Piotrowski led Chesapeake with 7.5 tackles while James Winston, Malcolm Dowery and Rodney Jenkins had 4.5 tackles each.

moved up from Class 2A to 3A and now plays in the same region as defending state champion Towson.

Still, the Mavericks have shown they are not to be taken lightly. They improved to 7-3 overall following Monday’s win at Carver A&T. Eastern Tech’s three losses came to Dulaney, Hereford and Towson, the last of which is ranked fourth in the Baltimore area in the latest VarsitySportsNetwork.com top 20 poll.

While the Mavericks lost in three games to Towson, they jumped out to a 2-0 lead before falling in five games to Hereford and Dulaney. Dulaney is ranked ninth in the area, according to VarsitySportsNetwork.com.

“It was tough to jump out to such a lead against Dulaney and Hereford,” Nugent said. “We showed we could play with some of the best teams in the area. But the girls have bounced back and played stronger as the season has progressed.”

Nugent said senior outside hitter Danielle Cockey, senior libero Abi Green, senior middle hitter Alexis Peay and junior setter Lauren Thompson are among the Mavericks key players this season.

Eastern Tech next plays at 5 p.m. Thursday at Woodlawn.

Kenwood’s Boyd Continues Strong Season

Senior cross-country runner continues to take on some of the top competition in the state.

She was the Bluebirds lone representative in Saturday’s McDonogh Invite at McDonogh School in Pikesville. Boyd placed seventh out of 69 runners in a time of 22 minutes, 2.7 seconds.

Other schools that participated in the race included McDonogh, Mount de Sales, Notre Dame Prep and Roland Park.

“It was a challenging course, but Jada had a great race and competed well against some of the best private schools in the area,” coach Mark Planamente said.
