While three Maryland colleges made it on Forbes' 2013 top 100 collegesUniversity of Maryland Baltimore County came in at No. 306 out of the 650 schools nationwide.

Although not among the nation's top 100 colleges, UMBC is the eighth best in Maryland.

"[The list] likely makes a big difference but it's also important to remember students will thrive in schools even if not top," Caroline Howard, who edited this year's list, tweeted in an #AskForbes Twitter chat.

The United States Naval Academy ranked as the best college in Maryland and No. 26 nationally, beating out Johns Hopkins University at No. 46—the hospital of which ranked No. 1 in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report—and University of Maryland College Park at No. 73.

As the first university research park in the state, UMBC also ranked No. 133 in Research Universities and No. 114 in the Northeast.

Other Maryland colleges on the list and their rankings include Loyola University Maryland (127), Saint John's College (173), Goucher College (267), Washington College (309) and Towson University (400).

Forbes and Washington, D.C.-based Center for College Affordability and Productivity considered 12 factors in the rankings, including student success, student debt, graduation rate and more, with post-graduate success weighing the most at 37.5 percent.
