Maryland Eastern Shore Bar Gets Bombed
The Middle River-based jet that dropped the inert device has been grounded. There was no explosion and all bar patrons were spared.
An A-10 Warthog jet operating out of the Warfield Air National Guard Base in Middle River has reportedly been grounded after accidentally dropping a practice bomb on an Eastern Shore tavern's parking lot. No one was injured.
The jet from the 104th Fighter Squadron in the 175th Wing was returning from a training mission Thursday night when the mishap occurred, according to an Associated Press report.
A customer at Darlene's Tavern in Sudlersville reported that the practice bomb created a 3-foot deep hole in the parking lot.
“I walked out looking to find something that would have ignited (and) when I walked out, the hole was so deep and wide and everything that I called out everyone to look at it,” Lena Hartlove, co-owner of Darlene's along with her fiance, Richard Reny, told MyEasternShoreMD.com.
Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Charles Kohler told the AP that an electronic failure may be to blame and the aircraft has been grounded during an investigation.
