Summer is here, but in these tough economic times, budgeting for that annual trip to the beach is more difficult than ever. With the gas prices rising over $4 per gallon, and toll fees set to double, many families find themselves rethinking their summer vacations, and looking for getaways that are closer to home.

Sadly, for many, that Ocean City trip might be out of the question this year.

Fortunately, however, eastern Baltimore County offers plenty of activities and local spots to help you and your family enjoy the outdoors and stay cool this summer. Some of my favorites include:

  • Picnic, soak up the sun and take a swim at Miami Beach or Rocky Point Beach
  • Launch a boat at one of the seven boat ramps in Baltimore County parks
  • Baltimore County Sailing Center offers affordable sailing programs at Rocky Point Beach Park
  • Use the fishing pier or fire up the grill at one of the newly renovated waterfront pavilions at Wilson Point Park
  • Enjoy the picnic areas, playgrounds and ball fields at Double Rock Park
  • Marshy Point Nature Center offers numerous daily activities and camps for kids.
  • Spend a day hiking, or rent a kayak or windsurfer at nearby Gunpowder Falls State Park

Hungry? Stop in for a cold drink and feast on crabs, local seafood, or other great dining options at one of the many waterfront restaurants and marinas on the eastside.

Movies? Spend a night at the historic Bengies Drive-In Theatre. Golf? Play a round at one of Baltimore County’s five public golf courses.
Why go to the eastern shore to go to the beach? There are so many similar, family-friendly activities available right here in the sixth district.

Whatever your preference, staying local offers has its benefits which are sure to keep you, your family, and your wallet happy this summer.

Just don’t forget your sunscreen!
