Baltimore County Shelters Offer Respite from the Frigid Weather

The Eastside Family Shelter on Franklin Square Drive is one of several in Baltimore County that offers overnight accommodations for homeless people.

With frigid, single-digit temperatures gripping the Baltimore region, Baltimore County officials remind residents in need of the many places they can go to get out of the cold.

Public facilities, including library branches, senior and community centers, shopping malls and place of worship are open during the day and offer respite from the cold, according to a statement from county officials.

Additionally, several emergency and temporary shelters offer a roof to those who would otherwise be homeless.

Baltimore County operates the following emergency shelters:

  • Eastside Family Shelter (men, women and children), 9100 Franklin Square Drive, Rosedale, MD 21237
  • Hannah More Shelter (women and children), 12041 Reisterstown Road, Reisterstown, MD 21136
  • Night of Peace Overnight Shelter (families), 7509 Windsor Mill Road, Windsor Mill, MD 21244
  • Westside Men's Shelter, 55 Wade Ave., Catonsville, MD 21228
From now through March, the county also operates a temporary, freezing weather shelter at the North Point Government Center, Wise Avenue and Merritt Boulevard in Dundalk.

The center is activated on nights when temperatures reach 32 degrees or lower and there are no beds available in other homeless shelters, according to the statement.

The government center shelter is open now through 7 a.m. Jan. 8. It will reopen at 7 p.m. Jan. 8 and close at 7 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, according to officials.

People looking for access to any of these shelters are asked to call 410-853-3000, (select option 2 when prompted) to find the closest available shelter.
