Back River Treatment Plant Receives $15M for Upgrades
The state Board of Public Works approved the funds as part of $19 million in grants for wastewater treatment plant upgrades throughout the state.
The in Essex was the main beneficiary of the state Board of Public Works which on Wednesday approved more than $19 million in grants for plant upgrades.
According to a news release from the Maryland Department of the Environment, the Back River plant received a $10 million Bay Restoration Fund grant and a $5 million Chesapeake Bay Water Quality Projects grant for upgrades that will eventually reduce nitrogen discharge by two-thirds, "significantly reducing the amount of nutrients discharged into Back River and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay."
The Board of Public Works—which consists of Gov. Martin O’Malley, Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp, and Comptroller Peter Franchot—also approved a $2.9 million grant to Anne Arundel County's Maryland City plant, $1 million to the Wesminster treatment plant and $758,000 grant for Frederick County's Gas House Pike plant, according to the release.
