Teens Burned Following Grill Fire in Rosedale

One girl suffered burns over half her body after someone poured gasoline on a fire around 9 p.m. Wednesday.

(UPDATED 2:29 p.m.) A 17-year-old Baltimore County girl is in critical, but stable condition after suffering burns over half her body following an explosion caused by someone pouring gasoline over a small grill fire, a fire department spokesman said.

Baltimore County Fire Department Captain Ross Cooke said the incident occurred around 9 p.m. Wednesday outside a house in the 6000 block of Shady Spring Ave. in Rosedale.

The girl suffered burns from the waist up and was transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center along with two other teens, a 17-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, Cooke said.

The boy was listed in fair condition at Bayview and the other girl was treated and released from the emergency room, Cooke told Patch.

Cooke said the teens had started a “small fire” using twigs and branches inside a grill. But the group decided they wanted to enhance the fire and one of the teens poured gasoline on the flames.

This caused the vapors to explode and led to the teens being burned, Cooke said.

“The fire just wasn’t what they wanted so they grabbed a five-gallon container of gasoline,” Cooke said. “It only had about a gallon of gas in it, but it was enough to cause serious injuries. This was a severe case of human error.”
