Police: Middle River Couple Dead in Murder-Suicide

Elderly man and woman were found shot in a home on Bird River Road.

(UPDATED) 6:07 p.m.—An Middle River couple died in an apparent murder-suicide, Baltimore County police announced Friday afternoon.

The woman, 84, and the man, 85, identified by police as John and Margie Sigmon, were found shortly before 3 p.m. by fire crews in the living room of a home on the 10100 block of Bird River Road. Both were shot and a note was left on the scene, said Elise Amacost, a Baltimore County Police spokeswoman.

The deaths remain under investigation, Armacost said, but police do not believe anyone else was involved in the murder-suicide.

A neighbor of the couple, Scott Sutton, said he heard two loud "bangs" around the time of the apparent murder-suicide, but assumed it was just an explosion from Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

"We were watching TV and didn't think much of the bangs," Sutton said. "Then when we saw all of the police swarm the house we knew something much more was going on."

Sutton, who has lived near the couple for 25 years, said they were friendly and seemed very caring toward one another. He was shocked to learn what occured just a few doors from his house in a neighborhood that is usually very quiet.

Sutton was in the news in February when a faulty . He just recently moved back into his rebuilt home.

"They always seemed so loving," Sutton said. "You just don't expect something like this to happen right next to your home."
