Police Investigating Robberies in Essex, Middle River

Four robberies kept officers in the Essex Precinct busy over the last week.

Baltimore County police have been busy with several unrelated robberies over the last week in the Essex Precinct.

The most recent robbery occurred early Monday morning on the 1500 block of Martin Blvd. Around 1 a.m., an 18-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman were standing outside the when an unknown masked gunman approached them, according to police reports.

At that time, the male victim remained at the store while the female ran away as the robber struck the male victim repeadedly with the gun and demanded money. Police said the robber then ran away toward .

While this was occurring, police said that a woman later identified as Danyelle Smialkowski, 22, of the unit block of Right Wing Drive, allegedly chased the female victim, knocked her to the ground and took her phone and bag. A witness to this crime chased the suspect and restrained her until the police arrived, according to police.

Smialkowski, who allegedly told police she had nothing to do with the first  robbery, was charged with robbery, second-degree assault and theft of less than $1,000.

Here is a breakdown of the other robberies:

  • On May 27, a 56-year-old man was assaulted and robbed between 11 p.m. and midnight. The victim told police that he was at the corner of Hopkins Landing Drive and Old Eastern Avenue when he was struck from behind and robbed of $30. According to police reports, the suspect took the money and ran away. The victim could not describe his assailant.
  • On May 25, two males, ages 17 and 19, told police they were assaulted and robbed on the 800 block of Eastern Blvd. According to police reports, two men approached the victims around 12:30 a.m. One of the robbers pushed the 17-year-old to the ground, grabbed the 19-year-old by the neck and demanded money. The victims eventually handed over a combined $80 before the robbers ran down Eastern Boulevard toward Dorsey Avenue, according to police reports. The victims told police the first suspect was a white male in his 20s, approximately 6-foot-2 and 160 pounds with a light complexion, blond hair and wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt. The second suspect was described as a white male, between 30-40 years old, 5-foot-5, 170 pounds with a light complexion and blond hair and wearing blue jeans and a green shirt.
  • On May 24, a 50-year-old Essex man reported being robbed early in the morning as he stood outside his apartment. According to police reports, the victim was standing on the unit block of Oak Grove Drive, when a man threatened him with a metal pipe before stealing his wallet, which contained his ATM card among other items. The victim then contacted police and described the suspect, who officers found nearby. Officers then arrested Joseph Drummond, 24, of the 800 block of N. Rose St., and charged him with armed robbery and first- and second-degree assault, according to reports.
