Two MD State Highway Workers Hit in Beltway Crash Near Parkville, One Dead

Maryland State Police confirmed one worker was killed and another injured at they worked on a sign off the highway's shoulder.

A Maryland State Highways worker was killed this morning and another was injured in a crash on the outer loop of the Baltimore Beltway.

Eddie L. Gliyard, 50, of the 5000 block of Hillen Road in Baltimore and a 25-year employee of the agency, was declared dead at the scene, according to Sgt. Marc Black, a spokesman for the Maryland State Police.

Nathan A. Brown, 38, of the 500 block of Kosoak Road in Middle River,  was taken to the University of Maryland's R Adams Cowley Shock trauma Center, where his condition was not known, Black said.

The two employees were working on a sign off the shoulder area when the crash occurred at about 11 a.m. between the Putty Hill Avenue overpass and the Harford Road exit, Black said.

A Volvo driven by Mary T. Levy, 61, of the 8900 block of Grummore Circle in Pikesville, left the roadway and struck the workers, according to Black.

Levy was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.

The outer loop of the Beltway was closed for about two hours before reopening in phases, with all lanes reopened to traffic around 2:20 p.m., Black said.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this time.  The investigation is continuing.
