As a precaution, area schools, including Sussex Elementary, and , were placed on alert status, which was lifted at 3:39 p.m., Baltimore County school spokesman Charles Herndon said.

Herndon added that parents were notified of the alert, which caused dismissal at Deep Creek Middle to be delayed because buses on other routes won’t be able to get back to the school until 4:15 p.m.

"This was all being done for the safety of the children as we know there are many children who walk home from those schools," Herndon said.
