Essex Crime: Trio Arrested for Burglarizing Vacant Home

Three people were arrested Sunday for attempting to steal various items from an Essex home.

Stephen Higgins, 57, of the 500 block of Sandalwood Road; John Tootill, 63, of the 9600 block of 10th Road, and Dora McCauley, 59, of the 500 block of Sandalwood Road, were arrested around noon by officers as they allegedly placed several wooden drawers from the home in a trailer, according to police reports.

The three told police that they had permission to be in the home, located on the 12600 block of Eastern Avenue, according to police reports. The home owner told police no one had permission to be in the residence, which had been vacant for about seven years, the report stated.

Rumelia Circle, unit block, between 10 p.m. April 29 and 9 a.m. April 30: A flat screen TV, laptop computer, Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 were stolen after someone kicked in the front door to a home. Total loss: $2,000.

Poplar Road, 300 block, between 7:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. April 30: A Nintendo DS,  47-inch TV, 26-inch TV, Nintendo Wii and cash were stolen after someone forced open a front door to a residence. Total loss: $1,589.

Compass Road, 500 block, between 9 a.m. and 2:20 p.m. April 28: A total of 11 guns, including several handguns and rifles were stolen from a home. Total loss: $6,247.

Tace Drive, 1100 block, between 7:45 and 9:10 a.m. April 27: A 32-inch TV, a Nintendo Wii, digital camera, cell phone, various medications and $600 were stolen from an apartment. Total loss: $1,649.98

Bowleys Quarters Road, 500 block, between 9:30 p.m. April 26 and 6:45 a.m. April 27: A 42-inch TV and Xbox 360 were stolen after someone broke a screen of an unlocked rear window in the apartment. Total loss: $700.

Holly Hunt Road, 500 block, between 7:07 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. April 25: A Coach handbag, Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, tooth paste and a razor were stolen after someone broke a rear door to enter the home. Total loss: $7,367.

Rose Garden Road, 1200 block, between noon April 21 and 9:27 a.m. April 25: An air compressor and power washer were stolen from a shed. Total loss: $700.

S. Woodlyn Road, 800 block, between 5 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. April 24: A Nintendo Wii, a laptop computer and various pieces of jewelry were stolen after someone pried open a rear door to enter the house. Total loss: $10,700.
