The Baltimore County Fire Department is using the occasion to remind residents this is also the perfect opportunity to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and .

The fire department suggests that residents with hard-wired systems should test their detectors monthly. Also, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more than 3,000 people are killed in house fires annually, with most of them coming in homes without working smoke alarms, the press release continued.

Smoke alarms should be located inside and outside of sleeping areas on every level of a residence, and when possible, the alarms should be interconnected so that when one goes off, they all sound, according to the release.
