Boating Accident Kills One, Injures Two

Incident occurred Sunday morning on Gunpowder River near APG; U.S. Army investigating.

One man died and two others suffered serious injuries in a boating accident  Sunday on the Gunpowder River near .

APG spokesman George Mercer said the boat was passing through waters in the U.S. Army installation's jurisdiction around 7:45 a.m. Sunday when the vessel suffered significant damage after hitting a buoy-like object in the water.

Another boater spotted the boat and towed it back toward Essex. The men, at least one of them believed to be from Middle River, were  transported to area hospitals, and one of them died. The extent of their injuries were unknown.

Mercer did not identify the victims, citing Army policy for not disclosing the  information until 24 hours after relatives are notified.

Baltimore County Police, the Baltimore County Fire Department and the state Department of Natural Resources were called to the accident.

The Army is investigating the cause, Mercer said.
