Baltimore County Police Department Chief Jim Johnson has been recognized by a black law enforcement membership organization for his efforts to prevent gun violence.

Johnson received an Outstanding Service Award from the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives for his role as chairman of the National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence, according to a statement from police spokeswoman Cpl. Cathy Batton.

The organization honored Johnson for his "steadfast leadership and commitment to working in a collaborative spirit to keep this nation free of gun violence," according to the statement.

"I am honored to receive the award," Johnson said in the statement. "The issue of firearms violence is very serious and I am gratified that my efforts to call for a background check for all firearm sales nationwide have been recognized by leading law enforcement organizations."
