10-Year-Old Boy Struck by Train in Middle River; Survives

After an Amtrak train engineer reported hitting a child, the victim could not be found.

After mixed reports published over the weekend, Baltimore County Police Department officials have confirmed that a 10-year-old boy was struck by an Amtrak train in Middle River Sunday.

The injured boy has been identified as Tyler Eugene Smith of the 1100 block of Cord Street in Middle River. He suffered serious injuries but is expected to recover, according to police.

The train struck the child at Eastern Avenue and Tidewater Lane near Chase, according to police officials.

Police were dispatched to the scene at 10:55 a.m. Sunday for a report of a possible injured person.

The train engineer told police that the train struck the child, but a victim could not be found.

Fishing tackle and a shirt were discovered underneath the train, and other evidence, including food and a Maryland driver's license belonging to the victim's father—Randolph L. Smith of the same Cord Street address— were found on or near the tracks, according to the statement. A tattered fishing tackle bag was found along the tracks near the Chase Fire Station at 12426 Eastern Avenue.

Initial reports stated that the child was taken to the hospital by private citizens before emergency workers responded.

The police investigation found that Randolph Smith took his son to MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, where he told medical professionals the child fell from some playground equipment, according to the statement.

Tyler Smith was taken from Franklin Square to the Johns Hopkins Children's Center. The child told police that he was injured on the train tracks, according to the statement.

The investigation has been turned over to Amtrak Police. The Baltimore County police report has been shared with the Baltimore County Department of Health and Human Services, according to the statement.
