Do You Have Your Father's Eyes... And Your Mother's Risk of Cancer?

Does cancer run in your family? If so, you might want to consider genetic testing. The first step is to talk with a genetics counselor.

You can inherit more from your parents than physical features and personality traits.

You may know that your family history can contribute to your likliehood of getting heart disease or diabetes. If one of these conditions "runs in the family," you may choose to take proactive steps, like exercising and eating healthy, to prevent developing the same problems your relatives have had.

But what about cancer? If you have a family risk of cancer, is there anything you can do about it?

Yes, and it starts with genetic counseling. Emily Kuchinsky, a certified genetic counselor at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, says the important first step in knowing your familiar risk of cancer is genetic counseling. Counseling involves talking about several of the factors that can determine if you are at genetic risk. From that you can make an informed decision on whether or not you would like to proceed with genetic testing. It's a personal choice, but a genetics counselor can help you reach a decision you are comfortable with.

Good question Sophia.....I was set to sign up until I saw where it is being held.
Can't believe they couldn't find a closer venue.

Hi Sophia - thanks for asking. Did you know MedStar Franklin Square serves both Baltimore and Harford counties? We have Oncology, Breast and Women's Care practices in Bel Air (on Plumtree Road). We occassionally hold seminars in Bel Air for this reason, but to be sure you get notice of all similar events (most held at the hospital), sign up for our free Getting it Right program at medstarfranklin.org/gettingitright.
