Veteran Nurse Honored by Franklin Square

Irene Mattheu, an operating room nurse for 30 years, has been named MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center's Nurse of the Year.

 

Irene Mattheu has been named MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center's Nurse of the Year.

Mattheu, who was honored at the hospital's annual Nursing Awards Ceremony held during National Nurses Week, has 30 years of experience as an operating room nurse, according to a news release from the hospital.

She was called a "role model" and a "team player with a positive and friendly attitude," the release continued.

“Her kindness toward our patients and families helps comfort them when they are oftentimes most stressed, prior to surgery,” her nomination read.

Mattheu was selected from a group of nurses in each line of service at the hospital. The full list of this year’s honored nurses includes:

  • Casey Michaelis, medicine
  • Janet Wojciechowski, oncology
  • Karen Wilhelm, women’s and children’s
  • Claire Bilski, community health and wellness
  • Kim Wienert, behavioral health
  • Robyn Holley, outstanding advanced practice nurse
  • Amy Taylor, Distinguished RN in a Support Role
  • Jan Lear, Outstanding Nurse in a Leadership Role
