February and Early March 2012 Events at CCBC

The new semester gives me another chance to brag about the wonderful programs and events held during February and March at a CCBC campus near you. Most are free; all are worthwhile!

Chase the winter blues away and enjoy a host of events and programs at the Community College of Baltimore County during February.  Fun and family-friendly pricing make entertainment and education affordable as well as enjoyable.

February – March 16 – All CCBC campuses
Registration for the second 7-week session
Apply in person or online at www.ccbcmd.edu for second 7-week session classes that begin on March 19.

February 10 – CCBC Essex
Music Forum:  My Favorite Things
12:20 p.m., Building E, Recital Hall, 7201 Rossville Blvd
Free.  No tickets required.
Music Coordinator Patti Crossman will present a recital of her personal favorite works for solo piano, piano and voice, and piano and violin, assisted by CCBC Music Faculty members Janet Crisalli Lindquist, Monica Otal, and Rachael Stockton.

February 16 – CCBC Dundalk
President’s Distinguished African-American Lecture Series presents Isabel Wilkerson, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author
11:15 a.m. K Bldg., John E. Ravekes Theatre, 7200 Sollers Point Road
Free but tickets are required.  Call the CCBC Box Office at 443-840-2787 (ARTS) for tickets.
Isabel Wilkerson, the first Black woman in the history of American journalism to win the Pulitzer Prize and the first African-American to win for individual reporting, will discuss her best-selling book, The Warmth of Other Suns, about the great migration.

February 17 – CCBC Essex
Music Forum:  The Capitol Woodwind Quintet
12:20 p.m., Building E, Recital Hall, 7201 Rossville Blvd
Free.  No tickets required.
Formed in 1977, the Capitol Woodwind Quintet has become known for its critically acclaimed concert appearances in the Washington, DC region, including the National Gallery of Art, The Phillips Collection, Strathmore Hall, and The Barns at Wolf Trap. The ensemble is comprised of members of The National Symphony and the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra.

February 17 – CCBC Dundalk
Astronomy program’s Star Party Observing Session
7-9 p.m., Observatory at CCBC Dundalk, 7200 Sollers Point Road
Free. No tickets required.

Planetarium program:  Benjamin Banneker’s Astronomy
10 a.m. Benjamin Banneker Planetarium, Room D-003, D Building, 800 South Rolling Road
Free. For more information, call 443-840-4560.
Learn how this free black farmer in neighboring Oella taught himself astronomy, helped with the mapping of Washington, D.C., and wrote almanacs.

February 24 – CCBC Essex
Music Forum:  The Legacy Spiritual Ensemble Vocal Quartet
12:20 p.m., Building E, Recital Hall, 7201 Rossville Blvd
Free.  No tickets required.
The Legacy Spiritual Ensemble strives to preserve the art and tradition of the African-American Spiritual, as well as showcasing derivative gospel music and music of African-American composers. The touring vocal quartet is composed of professional singers from the Washington, DC area who regularly perform in opera, concert and recital.

February 24-26, March 2-4 – CCBC Dundalk
Dundalk Community Theatre - Agatha Christie’s “Go Back for Murder”
8 p.m. Feb 24 and 25 and March 2 and 3 and 3 p.m. Feb. 26 and March 4

Return to the scene of the crime to explore an intriguing story of vindication as a daughter attempts to prove her mother’s innocence in the murder of her father.

Students studying applied music at CCBC Essex will perform selections in a variety of musical styles.

Children’s Playhouse of Maryland, Inc. presents “A Year with Frog and Toad”
1 p.m., weekends March 3 through March 18 and 4 p.m., March 11
J Building Lecture Hall, CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Boulevard
Tickets are $10 general admission; $8 for CCBC students, faculty, staff.

This delightful musical is based on the Frog and Toad children's stories written and illustrated by Arnold Lobel.  Let your children enjoy the adventures of a worrywart toad and a perky frog, with their assorted woodland companions, over the course of a year.  

March 5 - CCBC Essex
March 6 - CCBC Catonsville
CCBC and the Baltimore County Public Schools again co-sponsor College Fair for high school students and their parents.  More than 100 colleges, universities, proprietary and military schools are expected to be represented at this annual event.

Violinist Renata Artman Knific, cellist Bruce Uchimura and pianist Susan Wiersma Uchimura comprise The Merling Trio, recognized as one of today’s premier ensembles, has been hailed as a brilliantly distinguished group with remarkable gifts of communication, magnificent precision and an impeccable blend of sound.

March 10-11 – CCBC Catonsville
11th Annual CCBC Women’s Expo
10 a.m. – 5 p.m.  L Building, Athletics and Wellness Center, 800 South Rolling Road
Tickets are $5 general admission.
