CCBC Offers Free Dental Hygiene Services to Pregnant Women, Infants Statewide

Preventative services include medical/dental health history, blood pressure check, comprehensive oral examination, etc.

Undetected and untreated dental disease can pose a significant health risk to pregnant women and their future child.

The Dental Hygiene program in the School of Health Professions at the Community College of Baltimore County, funded by a grant from Care First Blue Cross Blue Shield, is working to eradicate this risk by offering free preventive dental services and education statewide to pregnant women and infants up to age two.

CCBC’s Dental Hygiene clinic, located on its Dundalk campus, 7200 Sollers Point Road, offers dental hygiene assessment and treatment by students under the supervision of licensed clinical faculty. This clinic is open year-round, Monday through Friday.

According to Kathleen D'Ambrisi, the program's director, "Our goal is to educate and treat at least 30 pregnant woman and infants each month. Follow-ups are also scheduled and covered by the grant for returning participants. The preventative services include medical and dental health history, blood pressure check, comprehensive oral examination, oral prophylaxis, oral hygiene instructions, fluoride treatment, and nutritional counseling."
