Civil Air Patrol cadet earns milestone award

Middle River, Md. - Civil Air Patrol cadet from the Glenn L. Martin Squadron is presented the General Billy Mitchell Award on 3 October 2013.

c/2Lt Britton Irechuwku earned Mitchell Award No. 63,214 in September 2013. LtCol Chris Howell, Group 2 commander, presented Cadet Irechukwu his award. The Billy Mitchell Award marked the completion of phase 2 of the CAP Cadet Program, with the ultimate goal of earning the Gen. Carl A. Spaatz Award. Cadets who earn the Mitchell Award are eligible for advanced placement in the military and academic scholarships.

Other cadets also earned promotions. Cadets Jose E. Boscana, Joshua Cogar and Alexander Olds earned the Gen. John Curry Award and promoted to c/Amn. Cadets Jordan Rowe and Jose A. Boscana earned the Gen. Hap Arnold Award and promoted to c/A1C.

Cadet Amber Williams earned Wright Brothers Award #24,990 and promoted to c/SSgt. The Wright Brothers Award is the first milestone award and marks completion of phase 1.

Cadets Ronald Flickinger, Thomas Burke and Steven Williams earned the Eddie Rickenbacker Award and promoted to c/TSgt. Cadet Deyvon Brooks completed the Charles Lindbergh Award and promoted to c/MSgt.

Cadet Flickinger was also awarded the Cadet of the Quarter Award.

Sm Charles Grebe promoted to 2Lt at the end of the night.

Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with 61,000 members nationwide, operating a fleet of 550 aircraft. CAP, in its Air Force auxiliary role, performs 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 80 lives annually. Its volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to more than 26,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet programs. CAP received the World Peace Prize in 2011 and has been performing missions for America for 71 years. Nearly 1,700 CAP members serve in Maryland. Last year wing members flew 13 search and rescue missions. The wing was credited with five finds and one life saved. Maryland Wing flew 32 missions for the State of Maryland. Members flew 2,106 hours in all mission categories. Volunteers contributed services estimated at $4.6 million.
