Prep Sports: Essex Schools Have Success In Early Tournament Action

Kenwood wins three first-round games in lacrosse and softball; Eastern Tech splits decisions in boys and girls' lacrosse.

Eastern Tech and Kenwood had a strong showing in the opening round of regional playoff action. The two Essex schools combined to go 4-1 on Thursday. Here is a complete recap of all the action.

Boys Lacrosse

Kenwood: The Bluebirds won 7-5 over Parkville, with a strong defensive effort led by senior Zach Temple in the Class 4A North contest. Kevin Dellasantos scored two goals and had an assist and Mike McKinney added two goals to lead the offensive effort for Kenwood. Senior goalie Josh Leese played well as he recorded 12 saves, while Jesse Greifzu won 12-of-15 faceoffs

Kenwood will travel to third-seeded Franklin on Saturday, aided by the return of leading point scorer Nick Eliadis, who was serving a one-game suspension.

Eastern Tech: The Mavericks beat Aberdeen 11-6, at CCBC Essex in a 2A North game.

Eastern Tech received strong efforts from senior attack Rob Davis (3 goals, 1 assist), senior midfielder Corey Vincent (3 goals) and sophomore attack Bobby Walsh (2 goals).

Also for the Mavericks, senior midfielder Josh Cannella and junior attack Hunter Oleszczuk had a goal and assist each while senior attack Alex Goodman had three assist and junior goalie Wyatt Alomnd contributed 11 saves.

The Maverick will face top seed and Baltimore County champion Hereford in the quarterfinals. The Bulls have won three consecutive state championships, and carries a 14-1 record into the contest.

Girls Lacrosse

Kenwood: Senior attack Megan Schoen scored the game-winning goal, assisted by senior Shannon Jessop as Kenwood defeated host-Glen Burnie, 10-9, in a 4A North showdown. The Bluebirds goes on to the regional quarterfinals where they will face traditional powerhouse and No. 2 seed C. Milton Wright.

Eastern Tech: The Lady Mavericks lost to Bel Air 14-6, ending their season. Wilmington College-bound senior Ashley Kroll scored one goal, along with one goal each from senior Jamie Richardson, junior Kelly Fernandez, sophomores Rachel Katzenberger, Lauren Thompson and freshman Jillian Henry.

Softball

Kenwood: The Bluebirds won 13-0 against Patterson, in a game that was called after the first inning. They advance to the regional quarterfinals with an away game at Urbana, the top seed in the 4A North region.
