Playoff Report: Essex Teams in Action on Monday

After mixed results in lacrosse on Saturday, local high school teams advance to Monday's games, with baseball, lacrosse, and softball action.

The MPSSAA regional playoffs keep rolling along, with Eastern Tech, Chesapeake, and Kenwood all playing tournament games on Monday.

Saturday's results were mixed for the three schools, as both of Chesapeake's lacrosse squads advanced to the regional semifinals, while Kenwood and Eastern Tech were eliminated.

  • Boys Lacrosse: Hereford 19, Eastern Tech 0
  • Boys Lacrosse: Chesapeake beat Western Tech (No score reported to MPSSAA)

BASEBALL

No. 4 Eastern Tech vs. No. 5 Edmondson/Westside: This opening game for the Mavericks should be a fairly easy way to start off their playoff run, playing an Edmondson/Westside team that plays in a very weak Baltimore City league. If the Mavs come out on top, they should expect to visit the top seed in the 2A North region, Digital Harbor. Harbor comes into the tournament after demolishing Baltimore City competition.

No. 6 Kenwood at No. 3 Perry Hall: This contest between two Baltimore County teams is a rematch from a week earlier, which Perry Hall won 3-1, despite a brilliant outing from Kenwood starter Shane Campbell on the mound. The winner of this one will go on to face either No. 2 Dulaney or No. 7 Urbana, both formidable teams in the 4A North region.

BOYS LACROSSE

No. 3 Chesapeake at No. 2 Loch Raven: After a good win over county foe Western Tech on Saturday, the Bayhawks have to face a tough team in Loch Raven. The host Raiders played in Baltimore County's Division 1 East, and will probably be the toughest opposition Chesapeake have faced all season. If they can pull off an upset, the Bayhawks would go on to the regional finals against either No. 1 Sparrows Point or No. 5 Pikesville.

GIRLS LACROSSE

No. 5 Chesapeake at No. 1 Sparrows Point: The Lady Bayhawks face top seed Sparrows Point in the regional semifinals, a team they lost to 17-3 earlier in the season. Sparrows Point has its eyes set on a regional title, so it would take a lot for Chesapeake to upset the Pointers. If the Bayhawks come out on top, they'd face either No. 3 Loch Raven or No. 7 Owings Mills in the regional finals.

SOFTBALL

No. 1 Eastern Tech vs. No. 8 City: County champion Eastern Tech starts its playoff run against a Baltimore City team that has faced weak competition throughout the season. The Mavs' softball team should face a fairly easy run in their 2A North region until the regional finals, where they are likely to have their third game of the season against Baltimore County runner-up Lansdowne.

No. 9 Kenwood at No. 1 Urbana: After playing a one-inning game against Patterson that ended early with a prolific 13-0 scoreline, the Bluebirds have to take a long ride to Frederick County to go up against a very strong Urbana team. The host Hawks bring a 15-0 record into the game.

No. 7 Chesapeake at No. 2 Lansdowne: The Bayhawks' softball squad faces a tough test against county runner-up Lansdowne, with the Vikings being traditional powerhouses in the 2A North region.

MIAA BASEBALL

Mount Carmel got off to a roaring start with Friday's 19-2 victory over Boys Latin in the first round of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference playoffs.

Kory Puller had a monster day, going 3-for-4 with six RBIs and three doubles, followed by Bobby Sanzone's 2-for-4, with three RBIs and two triples and Mike Krannebitter's 2-for-3, with two RBIs and two doubles.

Also playing well were Paul Lagaz, who was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Alex Hansford at 2-for-2 with an RBI and Zack Pugh at 2-for-3, with a double while  Evan Covelley went 2-for-2.

Winning pitcher Ian Arciaga struck out 10 batters for the Cougars (15-4), who led, 7-0, in the first inning and closed out the game with a decisive, eight-run fourth inning.

In the first inning, Pugh doubled and scored on Arciaga's single. After two walks, Puller crossed the plate on a single by Lagaz, who later scored along with Jon Cieslak - who had walked - on Krannebitter's double.

The Cougars went up, 8-2, in the bottom of the second inning as Sanzone singled, moved to third on a steal and a passed ball, and scored on Hansford's sacrifice fly ball.

The Cougars added three more runs for an 11-2 third-inning lead. Lagaz and Pugh singled and scored on a triple by Sanzone, who crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

The Cougars closed the show with a four-hit fourth inning that included two of Puller's doubles, another by Krannebitter and a triple by Sanzone.

The Cougars next face Severn (18-2) at 4 p.m. on Monday at Kinder Park in Anne Arundel County.
