Looking Toward the Playoffs: Boys Lacrosse

While the regional playoff draw for boys lacrosse isn't until next Monday, we look ahead to what Eastern Tech and Kenwood will face in tournament play.

While the three public school boys lacrosse teams in Essex-Middle River won't know their fate in the opening round of the regional playoffs until next Monday (May 9th), we can speculate as to how the squads will perform in the single-elimination tournament.

Kenwood and Eastern Tech play in the competitive Baltimore County Division 1 East, with teams such as Towson, Perry Hall, and Dulaney on the schedule every season. For tournament play, Kenwood is in the 4A/3A South region, while ET is a member of the 3A/2A North region. These two regions are arguably the deepest and most competitive in the state.

EASTERN TECH (7-5)

The Mavericks have had an inconsistent season, to say the least. The team started out 4-0, with an impressive season-opening win at North County, followed by respectable wins against Kenwood, Lansdowne, and Owings Mills. Since then, they've won 3 of their last 8, with two of those wins coming in the Eastside Challenge (5-4 over Mt. Carmel, 13-2 over Chesapeake).

Still with two tough road games on the schedule against Towson and Patterson Mill, the Mavs will look to get wins and carry momentum into a tough 3A/2A North region. With two victories, there is an outside chance of a top 4 seed, but it is probable that the team will not get a bye and be forced to play an opening round game.  Last year, the team rolled over Milford Mill in the opening round by a 20-2 score, but had their dreams of a regional title dashed by a strong Fallston team in a 12-2 loss.

This season, the region looks just as tough with two teams in VSN's Top 20 rankings (Hereford at #10 and Fallston at #11), and solid squads coming from Bel Air, Towson, Overlea, and North Harford.  In all likelihood, ET will have a similar path this year, with an opening round matchup against a team like Milford Mill, Lansdowne, Dundalk, or Overlea; and a tough second-round contest against one of the top schools in the region.

KENWOOD (6-7)

The Bluebirds have had trouble, much like the Mavericks, with the high level of competition in their division. Of their six wins, only one has been a division game (7-2 win over Parkville). The other five have been against lesser competition, although the team did score a convincing 9-7 win over Mount Carmel at the Eastside Challenge.

Kenwood only has one more game on their schedule, which is against a solid Division 2 Sparrows Point team. There is no doubt this is a big game for the Bluebirds, not only because it is a fairly significant rivalry game, but because with a win, the team can reach their goal of a .500 record for the season.

The 4A/3A South region is not one with any legitimate top-notch teams like the 3A/2A North, but it is a very deep region where nearly every matchup will be a competitive one. With no chance of a top 4 seed, the Bluebirds will have a play-in game in the first round, and could go up against legitimate competition in Franklin, North County, or Perry Hall; or they could be put in a fairly easy matchup against Patterson, Southwestern, or Woodlawn.
