Bevins: STEM is an Educational Priority

A Message from Councilwoman Bevins

Education is a priority for me, and I am proud that our Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) actively encourage education and development in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Beginning at the elementary school level, BCPS students have the opportunity to work on a STEM project, crafting a question, developing a hypothesis, and performing an experiment or study to come to a final conclusion.

STEM fairs provide an opportunity for students to display their work, and the results of the experiment, for parents, teachers and other students to see.

Last month, for the second year in a row, I had the pleasure of serving as a guest judge in the STEM Fair at Hawthorne Elementary School.  This year, I was charged with evaluating the “Question” that each participating student project explored.

There were many wonderful projects on display, and it was great to see the thoughtful analysis that the fourth and fifth grade students put in to each of their projects.

At the end of this month, I will host an awards ceremony at Chesapeake High School to honor the STEM Fair winners at each participating elementary school in the sixth district.

This is the second year that I have hosted this event, where I will present a County Council Resolution to each of the 1stand 2ndplace winners from the fourth and fifth grades at each elementary school.  I want to congratulate all of winners of the local STEM Fairs, many of whom will advance to the county-wide competition.  I would also like to thank all of the students, parents, teachers and friends who participate in the STEM Fairs, and especially the STEM Fair coordinators who work so hard to make each program successful.
