Bevins: Remembering Those Who Served During Sailabration

A message from Councilwoman Bevins

With summer upon us, the Baltimore region is gearing up to celebrate the bicentennial commemoration of the War of 1812.

Memorial Day unofficially kicked off the summer season, and amidst the barbeques and outdoor fun, I hope that we all took the time to remember the history and the uniformed men and women who have proudly served our country in the Armed Forces, especially those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.  In times of war and in times of peace, these brave men and women put themselves in harm’s way each and every day to protect the freedom we enjoy back home.

Beginning this weekend, we will celebrate the Star-Spangled Sailabration, marking the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, with visits from the Blue Angels, Naval vessels, Tall Ships, and plenty of history and fun along the way.  As we celebrate, let us not forget the brave soldiers who lost their lives defending our freedom.  While we honor those that have passed, it is also important to thank those veterans still among us for their service.

The idea of service is an integral part of every community.  Each member of a community has an important role.  From police officers and firefighters, to business owners and community leaders. From teachers to neighbors, and even elected officials, we all work together to make this community a great place to live, work, and play.

As we move through our busy lives, it is important to show our gratitude to those that serve our community. Take a moment each day to thank someone for what they do. It can be as simple as a thank you note to the person who delivers your mail or as grand as a volunteer luncheon. The smallest gesture can have the biggest impact on someone.

To those currently serving in the military, both here and abroad – Thank You!

To our Veterans, and retired service men and women – Thank You!
