Bevins: Now is the Season to Get Involved

A Message from Sixth District Councilwoman Cathy Bevins

September means many things for many people.

For most, Labor day weekend is symbolic of the end of summer. Local retail businesses use this time of year to advertise the latest fashions, trends, tech gadgets, and various household items, and there are plenty of sales and clearance events to help stock your new fall wardrobe.

Along with a new outfit, this month marks the beginning of a new season and a prime opportunity for sixth district residents to get involved in your local community. With a new school year underway, now is the perfect time to get active in various student-parent-teacher activities offered at your child's school.

Similarly, many sixth district community associations and civic groups resume their regular meetings this month and openly welcome the fresh faces, voices, and various perspectives of the residents from their communities.

I have built strong personal and working relationships with the active association leaders in the sixth district, and I strive to be out in the community as often as my schedule permits. Most associations and civic groups maintain relationships with their local elected officials, police, fire and safety officers, businesses representatives, and residents.

Although the specific mission of each group varies, many play an active role in local community interests, crime prevention, government affairs, community planning and revitalization, and other development issues that affect their respective community. This year especially, many associations will take a stance on zoning issues submitted as part of the 2012 Comprehensive Zoning Map Process (CZMP).

Therefore, I encourage all of my constituents to get involved with your local organization. Why let others make decisions for you? Let your voice be heard! The Baltimore County Office of Planning maintains a list of active community and business associations.

Of course, do not hesitate to use my office as a resource. If you have questions or concerns about issues affecting your neighborhood, about your local community association, when they meet, or who to contact, we can help.

Sincerely,

Cathy Bevins,

Baltimore County Council, Sixth District
