Shopping on the Street Where You Live: Martin Plaza

We drive by shopping centers regularly during our daily commutes, which means we may be missing many opportunities for a good buy or a good meal. In case you haven't been in Martin Plaza recently, it's time to take another look.

Martin Plaza, located on Martin Boulevard in Middle River, has undergone several upheavals over the last decade, and at times it looked like it wouldn’t survive.

An influx of private money and a commitment by large businesses brought it back from the dead.

Private business recognized the growth of the residential areas: Aero Acres, Ballard Gardens, Glenmar Manor, Middlesex, Middle River, Victory Villa and Wampler Village. The area transformed, adding Miramar Landing and Waterview.

From a business standpoint, the revitalization began with a $25 million investment and the building of an expanded , which took the place previously occupied by a long-closed Ames discount store. That expansion was followed by the addition of Kohl’s, residing in the space once occupied by a Super Fresh grocery store.

Now Martin Plaza is a thriving shopping center.

"From a financial standpoint for the neighborhood, the expansion has certainly been a good thing," said Wayne Miskiewicz, vice president of administration for the Chesapeake Gateway Chamber of Commerce. "It has added significant employment opportunities for people in the area. The additions to Martin Plaza have also been a great convenience to the people shopping in Middle River and Essex."

Among the freestanding buildings in Martin Plaza is a McDonald’s, which is undergoing a major renovation. It normally features a Redbox, but until the renovation has been completed, people will have to do without.

At the other end of the shopping center is one of the newest businesses to join the Plaza: Chick-fil-A, which on July 8 will celebrate Cow Appreciation Day. So, if you see patrons coming out of the eatery donned in cow costumes, it’s just another normal part of a normal day.

Across from Chick-fil-A is a Valvoline meant for quick in/quick out car maintenance.

Two banks service the shopping center. Wachovia is located by the McDonald’s entrance, and a Bank of America sits across from Chick-fil-A.
