Gas Prices Rise Despite Lower Demand

Tensions over Iran, economic woes in Europe keep fuel prices high, AAA reports.

 

Despite weak demand, the price to fill up at the pump is getting more expensive by the week.

According to the latest AAA survey, the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.51 a gallon, up 3 cents from a week ago and 38 cents from a year ago. AAA also reports that the average price for regular in Maryland is $3.58 a gallon, up 6 cents since last week and 49 cents from a year ago.

Nationally, demand for petroleum averaged 18.1 million barrels a day over the last four weeks, the lowest such average since April 1997, according to a AAA news release. But, the release continued, tensions involving Iran and economic concerns in Europe have kept oil prices high.

According to the news release, the price to fill up could reach $4 a gallon by Memorial Day.
