Oncologist and hematologist Michael Auerbach was cited for providing "outstanding support, counsel or guidance" to those with blood cancer.

Michael Auerbach, a MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center physician, has been awarded the 2013 Mission Advancement Award by the Maryland Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The medical oncologist and hematologist was honored for providing "outstanding support, counsel or guidance to those with blood cancer, and/or demonstrates outstanding dedication to promoting disease awareness and/or support related to blood cancers," according to a statement from MedStar Health.

The award acknowledges Auerbach's work that supports the society's mission to "cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families," according to the statement.

Nominators cited Auerbach's management of complex cases and his commitment to "continually go beyond what one would expect to advocate for his patients and secure the best care for them," according to the statement.

He has been credited with publishing or presenting more than 100 papers, collaborating with national and international colleagues.

Auerbach received his medical degree from New York Medical College in 1975, according to the MedStar website, and completed his residency at Cleveland Clinic Hospital in 1978 and a fellowship at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in 1981.

He is scheduled to receive his award Dec. 16 from members of the Maryland Chapter of the LLS, including Executive Director Jon Rosa and Tracy D. Orwig, director of patient access education and advocacy, according to the statement.
