The closeout retailer, located at 9977 Pulaski Highway, will employ about 45 people.

Big Lots welcomed a steady stream of customers Friday as the closeout retailer held its official grand opening at its newest store in Middle River.

The store, located at 9977 Pulaski Highway, sells everything from electronics to toys, to home décor and groceries, merchandise that typically sells for 20 to 40 percent less than discount stores and up to 70 percent below traditional retailers, according to a news release.

Company officials said the Middle River location is one of 1,400 Big Lots stores nationwide. The 49,000-square-foot facility actually opened its doors with a soft opening on Feb. 25.  The store represents the 20th location in Maryland, and is located between the chain’s stores in Edgewood and Dundalk.

“We’ve been very well received in Middle River,” Big Lots manager Dave Beatty said. “It’s a perfect location for people in the Essex and Middle River area who had previously shopped in our Dundalk and Edgewood stores. Now it’s even easier to shop for a great deal.”

As part of the grand opening, customers were greeted with free Big Lots travel mugs and hats along with a piece of cake and coffee. The store also presented Glenmar Elementary School with a $2,500 check.

“For more than 40 years, Big Lots customers have relied on us to bring them a one-of-a-kind shopping experience filled with brand-name merchandise at a price they can appreciate. We are thrilled to now be able to offer that same great value and convenience to Middle River shoppers,”  Rob Claxton, senior vice president of marketing for Big Lots said in a statement.

“We are confident this new store will prove to be a big hit with smart shoppers who are seeking better deals and bigger savings to combat the increasing costs of everyday living,” he said.

County Councilwoman Cathy Bevins, whose district includes Big Lots, said the store is a welcome addition to the community as the region continues to recover from the recession. Company officials said the Middle River location employs about 45 people.

“Job creation has to be our number one priority right now and Big Lots appears to want to be a vested member of the community,” Bevins said.
