McDonough Calls For Money to Fight 'DREAM Act'

Delegate will announce Thursday the creation of a campaign committee to raise money for 2012 ballot issue.

An effort to overturn a law allowing in-state tuition rates for some illegal aliens will move to the fund-raising phase with an announcement tomorrow by Del. Pat McDonough.

McDonough said he plans to announce the creation of a state campaign finance committee that will allow opponents of the so-called Maryland DREAM Act to raise money for literature and possible radio and television commercials in advance of the 2012 election.

"It's going to take a statewide, very aggressive effort," said McDonough, who will make a formal announcement during a news conference Thursday in Essex.

McDonough was part of an effort last year that collected 108,923 valid signatures and forced the newly passed law to the 2012 ballot.

Opponents of the referendum effort have seeking to stop it before the election. A portion of that effort that collected through a website has been dropped.

Opponents continue to press a second portion of the suit stating that the referendum is invalid because state law "forbids referenda on appropriations measures."

McDonough said he believes Casa de Maryland, the law's primary supporter, will attempt to raise as much as $10 million to see that the law is not overturned at the ballot box.

"I concede they will be able to raise a lot of money," McDonough said. "I think a lot of that money will come in from out of state from groups like SEIU. They'll raise a lot of money and do a lot of lying and misleading the public."

The delegate said he believes his group will need to raise "six figures" to be successful.

"I think a lot of our money will come from small donors from all over the state," he said, adding that he believes the effort to get the issue on the ballot proves that they can win even if they are out spent.

"We don't need to raise excessive amounts of money," McDonough said. "We'll have a huge number of volunteers in all 47 legislative districts around the state."

DK, the poster stated the following "Remember your kids aren't your kids any longer, they are property of the state. The state tells you what to feed them, what vaccinations your kids must have, it;s ok to be gay.........etc etc.", I made the point that the last statement is bigotry, it is ok to be gay. It simply is bigotry to state otherwise. Bigotry is simply a state of mind. Being a bigot is only reflective of your state of mind. No different than being a Dem or a Rep.

DK, the interesting thing about the "entitlement" menatality when brought up in a post it usually is an R calling Ds as the supporters of the lazy or something like that. Of course "entitlements" are interesting. Many people include Social Security as an entitlement. What they almost always exclude or don't mention are subsidies paid to farmers, corporations and the very rich. Sadly, this fact is the elephant in the room. The vast majority of "entitlements" are given to those who need it the least. I bring you Romney's self disclosed tax rate of 15%. he says he is just following the law and is doing nothing wrong. I call that a subsidy, what do you call it? Just the facts.

That's kind of like saying I don't want a qualified student to further their education. I can find that quote from you if you'd like. You've put words in my mouth that were further from the truth then my statement. If the cotton needs to be picked wages will be paid that will be acceptable to the possible cotton pickers. If the possible cotton pickers would rather stay home then pick cotton then we need to look at why unemployed people would rather stay home then pick cotton. We can have that debate if you'd like. You'd have to agree to not get emotional and let the discussion play out if we do that though, or I'm not going to get into that with you.

Your answer to my last question please
Paul Amirault January 18, 2012 at 01:04 pm
Steven, I don't get emotional discussing issues. Picking cotton as a job is no different than any other job. It is supply and demand, basic economics. There is a wage at which you would pick cotton. The point being, illegals will pick cotton at a lower wage than legals, thus business will hire illegals. Remove illegals from the equation and the price of goods will go up with the wage increase. Economics 101.

I’d like to consolidate some of this stuff and move it to the bottom so I can save time from having to keep scrolling back up.
Paul- Steven what do you do for a living? I grow my business on the back of the working class fools. Hold it, did I say that out loud? Hardly. Small electrical contracting business. The sheer luck you are born in the US is like winning the Lotto. I believe we need to cherish that and if I can share that with more people that makes my day. You posted earlier you believe in border security. What happened in the past couple days? Then explain to me why an amputee's prayers begging to have a limb regrow have never been answered? I repeat, never! http://science.howstuffworks.com/prosthetic-limb.htm Just because a prayer was answered in a way you didn’t expect doesn’t mean it wasn’t answered.

I’m not sure how you pay into something and when you talk about getting your money back out it is an entitlement. The problem is the money that was paid in gets paid out to some that didn’t pay in. We need to separate these programs into a trust fund (wait, they get confiscated anyway don’t they?) and a fund paid to those that don’t pay in. Subsidies. Let’s end crony capitalism! All in agreement say I.I! Short term capital gains are 35% long term capital gains are 15%. That could have been dealt with easily two years ago when the progressives owned both houses and the executive office. They chose not to. Suddenly it’s an issue.

There is no sudden there. I didn't like it when passed. Those with money got it through thanks to GWB. Democrats should have filibustered it, they were weak as they frequently have been

It was extended after The Good George went back to his home in texas that just so happens to be more environment friendly then Al Gores estate.

Thank you for answering, you are right, I is difficult finding things on he Patch.
Do you hire illegals? Would you if they were willing to work for $2 an hour less? No change on border security, I recognize that an uncontrolled influx of people has the potential to harm the economy. I'm still looking for the leg to grow back by itself, please show me just one. Science created the prosthetic, not a god.
steven bradley January 18, 2012 at 01:34 pm
I do not hire illegals. I would not if they worked for $2/ hr less. There are more important things in life then money. I do not look for the cheapest thing on the shelf when I go to buy something either.
Ah, you are looking for something to happen the way you want it to. Thank God science came up with the prosthetic huh?
Paul Amirault January 18, 2012 at 01:35 pm
Some basic facts you leave out Steven. In the ridiculous Senate we have it takes 60 votes to get anything done. 3% of the population controls 20% of the Senate. What a stupid system. The constitution never contemplated that we would have states with 600,000 people and states with 20,000,000 people both having 2 Senators. I can only hope that Obama lets GWBs tax cuts expire. They were a bad idea then and still are. I just don't think he has the cajounes to do it.
Paul Amirault January 18, 2012 at 01:39 pm
So what?
steven bradley January 18, 2012 at 01:49 pm
So we can blame someone for something when he is long gone but those we hold dear don't change when given the opportunity. And we can hold high our leaders for bringing about awareness to a subject that they make a great deal of money on and don't put into practice in their private lives.
Paul Amirault January 18, 2012 at 02:51 pm
Steven , you missed the point. It takes 60 votes in the Senate. For a very small window the Dems had 60, which changed to 59 after the death of Ted Kennedy. Today it is 53 if you count Lieberman as a Dem. You have every member of the Senate that is Republican signing the Norquist pledge not to raise taxes. I don't hold Obama dear, you just can't put blame where it belongs and move on.
steven bradley January 18, 2012 at 02:52 pm
The main thing the constitution never imagined was that the federal government would wield so much power. Well actually they did imagine it. That is what they were trying to limit when they created it in the first place. They foresaw some states with higher populations then others. That is why they created a two house legislature based on one house having two representatives for each state. Each state at the time was basically to be a country of itself with the states loosely bound together for trade and defense purposes. The other house based on population by state. No provision for representation by federal controlled land due to the fact that federally controlled land was not part of any state. Therefore it did not have a say in how the states conducted commerce.
steven bradley January 18, 2012 at 02:55 pm
They had a super majority. That is the fact. They could have done anything they wanted to with it. They choose to point the finger, but they had what they needed to change it. I have no problem accecting that. Why do you?
Reds January 18, 2012 at 03:35 pm
WOW, you stayed up until 2am to defend your " nitwittery" with this lame excuse.? Come on Paul be honest you went further that this.
Why did you not have the honesty to post my words in proper context? Pretty dishonest of you. That statement was made as part of pointing out that the school system is more involved in social engineering than teaching kids the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic and is the reason kids are dumbed down and do not do as well in math, science and english than kids from Asian and Middle astern culture. Your response was because I mentioned the teaching of gay issues in that response that if I didn't like it I should send my kids to private school. Oh, how arrogant, elitist and bigoted you yourself are Paul. ...
Reds January 18, 2012 at 04:00 pm
So Paul thinks our system is stupid. I think that our Founding Fathers would be amused at his words. No one is keeping you in this country Paul. I suppose you embrace socialism and perhaps even communism.
The only change that needs to be made is that we go to a popular vote rather than letting the nut jobs in Californification and other liberal states hold America hostage. I do find in funny that Paul has a problem with our Congress since he is far left wing and the Congress has been controlled by Democrats since 2008 elections until a long deserved correction was made in the elections of 2010. As for the Bush tax cuts, if Paul is indeed the elitist 1% he claims to be (which I doubt) then he is free to open up HIS checkbook and write a sizable which heck to the US Treasury as often as he likes. I doubt that he would. I know that he won't. Liberals like to spend other peoples money but when it comes time for them to pay up they disappear and run off to find another cause to embrace and demands other peoples money..
Buzz Beeler January 18, 2012 at 05:00 pm
Dkennlee, nice comeback.
Paul you made a good point and yes I would agree with you. I also agree with Reds. As I have always said, lets keep or views civil and not degrade them into a RA type forum. We must maintain the civility and integrity of this site, otherwise we won't be able to hear ourselves over the shouting. A code of conduct is important and is something we should all be concerned with. The truth is all of this does not matter one bit in the long run. The law and the polls will be judge. Votes count more than opinions. I have long believed that human nature will always play a key role in not only this issue but ever other one that impacts our lives. Over 543 comments and where are we now; no closer to any common ground then from the very first comment. Every war and conflict since the beginning of our existence has led to only more war and conflict. As I said human nature. Maybe one day genetics will determined our ability to be docile or oblivious. Time will tell.
Paul Amirault January 18, 2012 at 05:27 pm
Steven, the Dems had their 60 votes for a very short period of time and have always had Blue Dog Democrats who would not vote with the majority.. The Republicans as a rule tow the party line no matter what. Thus as soon as Scott Brown was sworn into office, the 41 votes of the Republican party block anything they wish to.
Reds January 18, 2012 at 05:50 pm
Soon we will correct the huge mistake of the 2008 elections, This country is far better of as a conservative, Christian nation.
As for those who support illegal immigration they simply do not understand our federal immigration laws. Immigration is only for purposes of bringing people into this country who will assimilate, become citizens and contribute to the growth of this nation. I could expand on this further but the plain fact is that illegals who come into this country and take menial jobs and jobs in road construction and general construction, retail...etcc.etc...... do not contribute to this nation and in most cases the local and state governments subsidize their wages with welfare and Medicaid programs. We do not need people entering this into this country and jumping into the lifeboat and expecting the rest of us to pay their way. Not long ago I had a drywall contractor come to my apartment. He sent an illegal Mexican to repair the wall and paint the bathroom. He seemed like a nice guy, his work was done well and I was satisfied. He voluntarily reveled to me me that he was an illegal and told me of his hometown and how things were pretty bad there. No doubt things are as he says. He then went on to say "I love America, they give you free S**** here"
