Group Leaves Bevins Note But Is Not Interested in Meeting

Campaign for Liberty left anti-speed camera fliers in the doors of homes on the eastside and a personal note for one freshman Democratic councilwoman.

Councilwoman Cathy Bevins' position on speed cameras may have attracted the attention of one local conservative group who left her a personal note in the door of her home this weekend.

Bevins, a freshman Democrat, has supported speed cameras in the past and said she will vote in favor of a new contract tonight. The position doesn't sit well with Campaign for Liberty—a group that bills itself as being for smaller government, less government debt and pro-free markets.

Bevins said Tuesday that the group left anti-speed camera literature at homes in her Oliver Beach neighborhood, including one in her door along with a personal note.

"Please be sure to spend extra time in your new precincts post-redistricting," the note read. "We certainly will."

Bevins said she attempted to contact Patrick Hussey, a Parkville resident who has described himself in previous interviews as one of the key leaders of the Campaign for Liberty group in the area, to offer him a meeting.

"I've got a pretty busy schedule today but I was willing to re-arrange my schedule to meet with him," said Bevins. "He said he didn't want to meet and that he wasn't one of my constituents."

Hussey was not immediately available for comment.

This is the second time Bevins has been the focus of the group's attentions.

A year ago, Campaign for Liberty sent emails to county Republicans calling Bevins and Council Chairwoman Vicki Almond "." Hussey also called Almond "a nut" who was "flying around on her broomstick terrorizing District 2."

The group also went after Councilmen Todd Huff and David Marks, freshmen Republicans from Timonium and Perry Hall respectively, for not being aggressive enough in trying to defeat speed camera expansion.
