United Way To Distribute Turkeys to Needy Families

The organization is set to deliver Thanksgiving meals to a record number of families next week.

The United Way of Central Maryland will hand out turkeys to 140 families in Essex as part of its annual Harvest of Plenty campaign.

The distribution will take place Tuesday, Nov. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Stephen's Church at 1601 Old Eastern Ave.

The turkeys are among 3,000 meals the United Way is providing in central Maryland. The organization will serve 596 meals in Baltimore County, according to a press release.

The organization is feeling the burden of heightened unemployment and rising food costs. In the press release, officials say calls to its health and assistance hotline are up, and for this year's Harvest of Plenty campaign, the United Way is distributing the most meals in the harvest program's 20-year history.

Donations to the United Way's Thanksgiving program can be made on their website.
