Summertime in Baltimore County

As temperatures start to warm up, area residents flock to pools or boats, or enjoy a snowball to cool off.

June started off hot, with temperatures reaching the high 90s, prompting Baltimore County schools to close three hours early on Tuesday and Wednesday.

This left parents and students looking for something to do. Local residents took to the pool, their boats and to area snowball stands as they looked for ways to stay cool and enjoy the warm weather.

At the same time, local doctors warn to take the proper precautions when outside as too much sun exposure can lead to burns, dehydration and heat exhaustion. Dr. Gaurav Kumar, a pediatrician with Franklin Square Hospital Center, offers the following sun safety tips:

  • Cover yourself and kids from head to toe in sunscreen. Reapply often.
  • Stay hydrated. Kids 90 pounds or less need 5 ounces of fluid every 15 minutes while being active in the heat; older kids needs 9 ounces every 15 minutes.
  • Stay inside during the hottest times of the day, between 10 a.m. -4 p.m. 
  • Never leave kids or pets in a hot car for any amount of time—cars act as greenhouses.
