Baltimore County Schools Closed After Mix of Snow, Freezing Rain

Winter weather advisory remains in effect until noon.

Baltimore County Public Schools are closed and the Community College of Baltimore County campuses will open at 10 a.m. today as a winter storm warning remains in effect until noon today.

According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain will come to an end later this morning with temperatures rising above freezing in the afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid- to upper-20s this morning before rising to the low 30s by late morning. The temperature is expected to reach the high 30s by this afternoon.

Due to the weather, the Baltimore County snow emergency plan is in effect. This means: 

  • vehicles traveling on the roads must be equipped with snow or all-weather radial tires or chains
  • no parking is permitted on designated snow emergency routes

According to the Baltimore County winter storm center, crews have completed salting 100 percent of local roads and are retreating where necessary. Also, 10 percent of roads have been plowed. Motorists are encouraged to keep speeds down and plenty of distance from other vehicles.

On Patch websites throughout Maryland, Charlie Gischlar, a State Highway Administration spokesman, announced, "The State Highway Administration is treating roads and highways with salt. There are some slushy patches, particularly on elevated sections of highway. Log onto www.roads.maryland.gov and click CHART for live travel information."
