Olszewski Satisfied With Road Paving Redistribution

Councilman John Olszewski Sr. doesn't know much about his colleagues' concerns about being retaliated against by County Executive Kevin Kamenetz.

But what the Dundalk Democrat does know is that more than $3 million in supplemental money is coming to his district for road paving projects. Money that four of his colleagues believe was taken from projects in their districts days after they voted against a pension bill favored by Kamenetz.

"All I know is that the administration told me my district was getting more money," said Olszewski. "I was happy about it."

Olszewski along with Councilwoman Cathy Bevins, an Oliver Beach Democrat, and Todd Huff, a Timonium Republican, voted not to table the controversial bill that would have eliminated overtime as part of the pension calculation for some county workers.

Two days after their vote, Don Mohler, in an email obtained by Patch, told each of them they would receive more than $3 million each—nearly $10 million total—for road resurfacing projects in their districts in the current budget year. That's about 40 percent of the $25 million total set aside for such projects for the current budget year that ends June 30.

Olszewski said he didn't know how much of the $25 million had been allocated to his district before the additional money was awarded.

Yesterday, Patch reported that Council Chairwoman Vicki Almond and fellow Democratic Councilmen Ken Oliver and Tom Quirk, and Republican Councilman David Marks said Kamenetz was retaliating against them for voting to table the bill. All four said access to department heads has been restricted, resolution of constituent complaints impeded and that they believe money for projects in their districts was being redirected.

Olszewski said no promise of additional money was ever made to him before his vote.

"There was no quid pro quo," said Olszewski. "I voted on the merits."

When asked if he thought the additional money awarded last month came out of his colleagues' districts, Olszewski referred the question to the affected council members.

"You'll have to ask them," he said. "I don't know if that's how they see it."

"All I know is that there are a lot of roads in my district that need repaving," said Olszewski.

Olszewski said he hoped the issue wouldn't divide the council.

"I just hope we're able to do the people's business like I've done for the last 14 years," said Olszewski.

Been down Broening lately? I went to a community meeting last night and the County Executive made it clear to Sparrows Point Community that we are only going to see "core" priority items right now. That list included education, public safety, and infrastructure. Well...here's your infrastructure.

Repaving roads is expensive and necessary, and with Broening Hwy. as an example of the many issues, it is something we can certainly use.

How is this possibly a negative to you? We weren't getting anything, now we are.

The Broening Hwy repaving is already on the books and it is a CITY funded project since the part that needs repaved is in the city.

Broening Hwy has always been a mess since I can remember as a child way back in the 60s. It's the heavy truck traffic and you can repair it constantly and it will still be a mess. We have to stay on target...it's about corruption in our government, local and beyond. We need to start repairs in BCC and move on to State levels. Right now, we need to focus on this election and get rid of Dutch Rupersberger and Ben Cardin. Volunteer for a Republican candidate's campaign and help clean house. In Dundalk, it's Nancy Jacobs for Congress and in the State, Dan Bongino for Senate....both, good, decent people.

They don't care about the working people. But they give the people that don't work everything on a silver platter while the taxpapers are given the shaft. They don't care. The politiicans have coverage for everything even after out of office. Why would they care about the working class that pays for everything and get nothing back. Maybe they will want a pint of blood next to go with the toll increase...disgusting government. Must be nice to go to bed and not really have to worry where you will get money to fix a car screwed up by roads they can't fix.

As far as any of the roads that have been done in Dundalk so far...Does anyone remember last year they put a layer of cement like stuff over our roads. It wasn't a fix..It was a cover over. The new alleys that we got..We had to pay so much a year in our property taxes till the homeowners share was covered. As far as the Wise ave Bridge...It is the ugliest color blue there is...That would not fly in other parts of the county. Finally we got one new school and one new vo-tech. That's nothing compared to other parts of the counties...

That stuff they put on the roads was "slurry", and I agree, it was awful. Hopefully the $3 million that's going to be spent will be spent well. I like that it's going to infrastructure., something that if too often ignored.

And maybe I'm wrong, but I thought Broening went through Turners...right at the edge. Is TS not in the county? And that is one of many examples. Glad to see this happening. Why is everyone so negative about everything all the time?

There will always be things we can disagree about but some people will find a way to make everything rotten to the core. Here's to 3 mill coming our way. However it happened, it's happening here. All people do is whine and cry that nothing gets done, that we get nothing, etc. Now we do and that is a problem.

And Shellf, 95 million dollars in new school construction is an awful lot. As a teacher, I'm a little jealous that I won't have a facility like that to teach in. From what I understand, it's going to be pretty incredible. Hopefully, we'll take care of it as a community and it will be a resource for our entire population, not just the students of DHS/SPHS.

Get the money and complain, don't get the money and complain. Does anyone notice a constant, the complaining. You can't please any of the people any of the time. If you're so unhappy then have the Councilman give the money back I'm sure there are communities that could use it. If you don't want to give it back then take a dose of "shut the heck up".

But when the results came in...I could not believe it.. I asked the candidates to ask for a recount. Not sure if they ever did. Especially when it came to Minnick. I know that he lost. It's all corrupt. We will never know. Seems like the little guy never makes a difference. Everyone votes what their parents voted and never read the issues..So yes John Sr. is in KK pocket and John Jr is in O"malley's pocket..

I am glad that we are getting the money. I hope that it will finally make it's way to DUNDALK. The problem is that the money usually doesn't make it to DUNDALK. There is a lot of back room deals that are made for or against our community. We are asking for transparency. With so much of this back and forth, nothing is getting done. It's all in the back and forth stage. Like the bike path near St. Helena Park, The new Dundalk shopping center, the old Seagrams plant, new businesses. So It's more the frustration at what is not getting done. I am thankful for our new schools. Added note. I have been in touch with Delegate Mike Weir, He is the only one who is taking up the cause for the cut out for the curbs so my daughter who is in a wheel chair and other disabled people can get out into the community. I have contacted other delegates, county execs, county councils, senator, It has fell on deaf ears. Thank you Del. Mike Weir.

Could it be the councilman wanted better roadways in order that the people utilizing them might be able to drive a little faster and not notice the blight so much.

Bottom line is Olszewski Sr. is the main "good old boy" left on the Baltimore County Council that got the huge retirements. He was Kevin Kamenetz's main supporter on the east side during the election. Did Olszewski have some legal trouble that got resolved before the last election? Of course, his district will get taken care of in the Kamenetz budget.

Councilmen who go along get rewarded. Two of the other "good old boys" from the previous Baltimore County Council, Vince Gardina and S. Sam Moxley got "cushy" jobs in the Kamenetz administration.

Gardina who now heads the Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability making $147,900.00 per year. Gardina directed $168,000 from his leftover campaign funds to the Kamentz for Couanty Executive campaign. Good move because he will be paid more than that in public money as a salary in less than 2 years.

Moxley is now an Assistant County Attorney with a salary of $99,500 per year. Not bad considering his anticipated retirement as a County Councilman. Can he also get a pension from Baltimore County for the Assistant County Attorney job?

Let us all remember that Kamenetz did not score a landslide victory in the election that put him in office. Perhaps we can break the "good old boy" curse in the next County Executive election.

It's one of Mr. O's pay backs for supporting KK in 2010 and at the expense of his follow colleague's on the council for having a back bone. The question is who will benefit from Mr. O's new found treasure. Will it be the citizens of Greater Dundalk, Essex, or Rosedale area's? Maybe, but let's wait and see how this new found treasure gets tied in with the new CZMP and development thats proposed for our area's, like Seagrams, Daimond Point, Sparrows Point country club or Ft. Howard. Oh ! Let's not forget the Yorkway project thats not completed. You can bet, many eye's will be watching very closely to see where these repaved area's end up in our communities and who will benefit more from this new found treasure. Our neighborhood's or the developers of the area. Any bets!

Shell9, things will only change when politicians stop playing games and begin to deal with reality as apposed to fantasy.

When Dutch was county executive he started the influx of - Move to Opportunity - and now through a new study we see the repercussions of this decision.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/business/real-estate/wonk/bal-new-study-links-crime-rate-to-public-housing-relocation-efforts-hint-the-results-arent-as-dramatic-as-you-might-think-20120419,0,2994400.story

The Sun downplays the story by claiming the results are less dramatic when smaller number of residents are relocated, which would state the obvious.

This is however not the case when larger numbers are relocated into an area. A quote from the article reads, "Neighborhoods with high concentrations had violent crime rates "21 percent higher, on average, than they would have been with no relocated households, other things being equal."

This is a fact ever police officer working the streets knows but cannot say.

In Response to my comment..I know that this started back in the day of Mayor Schmoke...We were promised we would not be saturated with section 8. It would be dispersed throughout the county. Why we had to take the city's section 8 to begin with was criminal in my eyes. When O'donnell Heights closed or part of it, we go the residences. Yes, I am mad. I have friends on both sides of the isle. People who are on section 8 who just need a leg up. They take care of their homes. They are trying. I have hard working friends who own homes and yards look ghetto. BUT a section 8 house or rental is more likely to have bad tenants or ghetto yards or pit bulls. Especially if the tenants are coming from the inner city. I respect our police department. I may not always agree, but I respect them. I teach my kids to respect the law. I see on the news every night how the Baltimore City Police is being blamed and disrespected. How can our county police keep our once very safe Dundalk safe anymore??

Only because the "fab 4" went against THIS CE are you covering for them. Think of it this way, if you can, let's say there was a commitment from 4 Councilpeople to vote against the Fort Howard project. Then as they went into vote, got together and changed their minds and voted yes. Would you be so supportive? I think not. When you've given your word it should stand for something. So after all of this discussion, what should be Dundalk's plan of action? It would be nice to see PEACEFUL rallies in the parks (hot dogs, sodas etc) to invite people to sign up to vote perhaps, talk to them about pressing issues and changes that they would like to see for Dundalk. Every election it is the same..You see signs and people waving on Merritt Blvd. I worked along side a candidate the last time who actually got out but maybe not in the way Dundalk responds. It's more than going door to door. Half the people you meet will not come out to vote. Why not have a voting booth at the shopping centers? I laugh at that too, but it is where everyone is..The kids are off school...It's a day of running to the store. (OR) Let they parents vote when they pick the kids up for school that day before. They would not have to worry about coming out. YES...We are a society of lazy voters!! I know what everyone thinks, "why should we have to go to such great lengths, people should want to vote." Well People aren't in love with the USA like they used to be. I love America and dare them to go anywhere else in the world and have it so good. SO back to our plan to get the message out...We need to point out that things aren't getting done..I worked for the county for 12 years..So I know first hand what you can and cannot say..SO I LEFT!!! So now I can say pretty much anything that is not threatening. SO we need to form a "REFORM DUNDALK COMMITTEE" endorsing no candidates..What say you???

I find it funny that people just vote straight down party lines... it's a very sad statement that our voters do not really read up on where each candidate stands on issues. But nonetheless.. thank you for the kind words about my father.
