Between 3,000 and 4,000 people are expected to attend.

A major Christian rock event is coming to White Marsh Mall this Saturday—free of charge and open to the community. Located in the Boscov’s parking lot at 8200 Perry Hall Blvd., Rock the Block runs from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 12. A mall press release describes the event: Rock the Block is not a conventional event but a high-energy experience incorporating music and multimedia that encourages everyone to be involved. There are rappers that entertain and lasers and lights swirl overhead while drama, dance, and videos spread messages of love, hope and character. College Student By Day, Pro Wrestler By Night

Jessika Heiser, known as Jessie Kaye in MCW, is pursuing an education at Towson University while also working to achieve her dream of becoming a pro wrestler.

Jessika Heiser gets beat up by guys on a weekly basis and she wouldn’t have it any other way. The 20-year-old Heiser proudly shows off the bruises and cuts that often cover a good portion of her body. Those injuries came following a recent session of training to become a professional wrestler. Heiser is less than two years removed from pursuing her dream. She currently is a regular fixture with Maryland Championship Wrestling. There, she is the evil Jessie Kaye, where her job is to incite the crowd while leading her man MCW veteran Ronnie Zukko to the ring. She also plays the part of MCW’s co-Commissioner as part of "Team McDevitt," a group of "heels" or bad guys led by MCW owner and Middle River resident Dan McDevitt. "I’ve been really …

World-Renowned Choreographer Returns to CCBC Essex

Peter Pucci, a CCBC Essex alum, helped current students develop a dance as part of the school's annual spring concert.

World-renowned choreographer Peter Pucci never envisioned himself to be an artist. The son of a bricklayer, Pucci grew up in East Baltimore and graduated from Northern High School in the 1970s before moving on to what was then Essex Community College, now CCBC Essex. Pucci’s goal was to eventually become a physical education teacher. But, a dance class that was a required course for his major soon changed all of that.  That class— movement improvisation—was a “disguised dance class for jocks,” said Pucci, who was on the school’s track and cross country teams. The teacher of that class, Carol Drake Cascio, saw his potential as a dancer and encouraged him to pursue it as a career, Pucci said. “I didn’t discover dance,” Pucci said. “Dance …

'Strait Shooter' Still Rocking After 30 Years

The local rock/country band, who continues to grow its fan base in the Essex-Middle River area, will be playing Saturday at the American Legion Post 148.

Chances are if there is a bar or restaurant that hosts live music in the Essex-Middle River area, Bill Romano has played there. Romano has played rhythm guitar and provided vocals for the local band “Strait Shooter” since the group was formed in 1981. While he is the lone original band member, Romano believes Strait Shooter is as popular as ever. Follow Essex-Middle River Patch on Facebook and Twitter. The band performs around 65 dates a year, Romano said, playing throughout Maryland, Virginia and Delaware. This includes a show Saturday at the American Legion Post 148 Bull Roast in Essex. “I think we’re the hottest band in the Essex-Middle River area right now,” Romano said. “I think we’re requested a lot because we try to play something …

Eastern Tech Students Trying to Save Theater Department

Budget cuts forced the elimination of four teachers from the Essex high school, although principal Tom Evans promises to keep the drama club intact.

Eastern Technical High School Principal Tom Evans said the school will continue to have a drama club next school year even as the school was forced to eliminate its theater department due to budget cuts. Evans said the school is losing four teachers next school year and he was forced to find an area that he could cut. With just enough students to fill two classes next school year, Evans said he couldn’t justify offering theater classes. “Unfortunately, we had to cut from somewhere and the student interest for theater classes just wasn’t there next year,” Evans said. “I support the arts as much as anyone in schools, but times are tough and a decision had to be made. We will find other ways of keeping the drama club open.” Follow Essex-…

Despite the cold, fans flocked to Friday evening's spirited event.

The Avenue at White Marsh became a sea of purple Friday evening as fans gathered to show their support for the Baltimore Ravens, scheduled to battle the Texans in the playoffs on Sunday afternoon. The shopping center hosted its second Rally in the Alley this year, a pep rally sponsored by area stores, with giveaways, a fan contest and appearances by the Ravens cheerleaders and marching band. Will Sunday bring a win or a loss for Baltimore? Tell us in the comments. Jackie Ruskey of Essex, covered in a face paint, several layers of Ravens gear and wearing a fiber optic purple wig, said she expects a win. "We're going all the way this year," Ruskey said. Here Comes Santa Claus, Right Down The Avenue

The holiday tradition offered family fun at the White Marsh shopping center.

‘Twas the first Saturday of December, and all through The Avenue at White Marsh, crowds gathered to watch the 13th annual Holiday Parade. For some in attendance, the two-hour-long event signaled the beginning of the holiday season. “It’s a little family Christmas tradition for us,” said Maureen May, who has been coming to the parade with her husband and children since moving to Perry Hall about seven years ago. Glancing over at Megan, 11, and Miles, 10, she added, “They see the parade, and then they really know that Christmas is coming.” Cubmaster Joe Gladden, who marched in the parade with members of Cub Scout Pack 130, noted that the celebration also represents something of a launching point for the pack’s seasonal efforts, “We are just …

Annual winter wonderland fundraiser for Kennedy Krieger Institute takes place Thursday to Sunday at the Maryland State Fairgrounds.

Santa and his sleigh are making an early pitstop in Timonium Thursday for the 22nd annual Kennedy Krieger Institute Festival Of Trees. The annual fundraiser welcomes families to enjoy rows of creatively decorated Christmas tress, a playland for children, live entertainment every hour on the hour and much more. All money raised goes toward the Kennedy Krieger Institute.  "We're looking forward to all the families coming out with their happy smiling faces," said Lainey Lebow-Sachs, executive vice president for Kennedy Krieger. "For me the best part is walking around watching the kids and parents and having such a good time—taking their holiday, Christmas card pictures in front of the gingerbreads or the trees." PHOTO OF THE DAY: Ravens Avenue Art Gets Festive

Street art helped prep The Avenue at White Marsh for the Thanksgiving game.

Ravens season, meet holiday season. In preparation for the team's upcoming showdown with the 49ers on Thanksgiving Day, street art at The Avenue at White Marsh got some holiday flare. Local artist Jim Buckler produced similar Ravens paintings last September, without the Santa hat and Christmas lights, according to marketing manager Lisa Geiger. How are the Ravens getting incorporated into your holiday celebration? Anyone having a purple turkey? Tell us in the comments.
