Teams Across Essex Prepare to Relay for Life

Annual events help raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Relay for Life season is in full swing.

The American Cancer Society hosts dozens of Relay for Life events in and around Baltimore from April to June.  Each event is unique, yet they all share commonalities, such as the first lap designated the “Survivors’ Lap,” and at dusk each event holds a “Luminaria Ceremony.”

New teams are currently being formed. New and returning teams are busy raising funds as they strive to win prizes while raising as much money as possible for a good cause. Watch for announcements for events geared toward raising funds for individual relay teams. There will be dances, bull roasts, flea markets, yard sales, car washes and even a pool tournament—just to name a few.

It should be noted that money raised at local Relay for Life events remains in the area.

Services funded through Relay events include:

  • The Wig Room—a fun room to visit at the White Marsh American Cancer Society office where patients can obtain, and try on, wigs of different colors as well as short or long hair styles.  Wigs are free.
  • Reach for Recovery—Transportation services are provided by volunteer drivers who ensure patients can reach their chemo or radiation therapy treatments.

The Essex Relay For Life event is set for June 10 at CCBC Essex. For more information about how to get involved or donate to the event, go to the Essex Relay website.

This year, the Baltimore region is also hosting a “Bark for Life” event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 2.

Visit their webpage for registration information. The event will take place at Our Lady of Hope in Dundalk and is being hosted by the Dundalk Relay and the Essex Relay committees. Teams will often consist of a dog and its human.  But, if your dog is not "animal-friendly," feel free to leave Fido home.

All dogs must be on a leash, regardless of how well trained they are.  More details and registration information is available online at Bark for Life .
