Rivalry Week Heats up for Essex Schools

Kenwood, Eastern Tech and Mount Carmel prep for key contests against neighborhood rivals.

Kenwood’s boys basketball team is hoping to end a two-game losing streak when it travels down Mace Avenue to face Essex rival Eastern Tech at 6:30 p.m.

Kenwood is 10-3 following a 67-50 loss at Woodlawn on Jan. 13 and a 47-39 loss at on Jan. 19.

Senior guard Travis Jenkins is the Bluebirds leading scorer averaging 10.8 points. He also tops in assists at 4.3 per game.

Senior forward Jonathan Richardson is averaging 10.3 points and 6 rebounds while guard Dana Johns is averaging 9.6 points a game and forward James Brogdon grabs a team-high 6.9 rebounds a contest.

Eastern Tech has struggled to a 3-10 record this season, which includes losing its last four games. The Mavericks are coming off a 62-39 loss Friday at Hereford.

Kenwood, Eastern Tech Ready for Rivalry Game

Kenwood is coming off a mixed week in which it lost at Milford Mill 71-26 on Jan. 18 and defeated Parkville 44-22 on Friday.

The Bluebirds are now 9-4 heading into tonight’s 6:30 tip-off against visiting . Senior forward Denesha Tatum is Kenwood’s leading scorer (14 ppg) and rebounder (8 rpg).

Other key contributors for the Bluebirds include guard Cierra Wilson, who averages 2.5 assists and steals a game while Dashawna West scores 7 points a contest.

Eastern Tech enters tonight’s game 5-6, which includes a 47-33 loss Friday against Hereford. Prior to that, the Mavericks had won two straight, which included a 52-44 win Jan. 13 over . In that game, junior guard Aliyah Levy finished with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals.

Mixed Results for Kenwood in County Indoor Track Meet

Kenwood’s girls team placed sixth out of 24 teams in the Baltimore County indoor track championship at the Fifth Regiment Armory in Baltimore.

Senior Rayven Ray, who will compete for CCBC Essex’s track team next season, led the way for Kenwood as she won the county high jump title by clearing a school-record 5 feet.

Also for Kenwood, Rakiya Ratliff broke the school record in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.81 seconds to place fourth overall while Shaneara Terry took third in the as she cleared a school-record 7 feet, 6 inches.

Kenwood finished with 20 points overall as Hereford won the team title on the girls side with 103 points.

On the boys side, Kenwood placed 16th with Jaleel Feggins leading the way for the Bluebirds. He tied for fifth place in high jump as he cleared a personal-best  5 feet, 4 inches.

Hereford won the boys title as well. The Bulls finished with 91 points.

Eastern Tech Wrestling Preps for Eastside Challenge

Eastern Tech continued its solid season last Thursday with a 45-27 win at .

In that win, the Mavericks jumped out to a 33-3 lead before holding off a late Comets rally.

David Wozniak (126 pounds), Stephen Beam (138), Ilya Usik (152) and Nathaniel Gale (170) secured pins against Catonsville.

Eastern Tech (7-3) next takes to the mat at 4 p.m. Thursday for a tri-meet at Kenwood that also includes fellow Essex rival . Then on Saturday, the Mavericks will compete in the Overlea Invitational.
