Martin State Tops 35 Maryland Airports in Revenue, Job Creation

The airport in Middle River brings in $224 million in revenue for Maryland, according to a recent study.

Within days of the Federal Aviation Administration giving notice that air traffic control towers at Martin State and 148 other airports nationwide would close, Maryland aviation officials released a study showing the economic impact of the state's public airports.

The Herald-Mail first reported that Martin State Airport led Maryland's public airports (with the exception of BWI) economically, bringing in $224 million in business revenues and 1,971 jobs, according to the report.

The study detailed the economic impacts of 35 airports in Maryland, which included all public airports but BWI, which had a separate report.

Called the "Economic Impact of Airports," the report was prepared for the Maryland Aviation Administration in part through a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to quantify the jobs, employee earnings, business revenue and tax revenue generated by the facilities.

Martin State generated the following, according to the report:

  • 1,971 jobs
  • $107,904,000 in personal income
  • $224,485,000 in revenue
  • $52,415,000 in local purchases
  • $10,790,000 in state and local taxes

Hagerstown Regional Airport produced the next highest amount of jobs, with 1,338. The airports generating the fewest jobs were Havre de Grace Seaplane Base and Kentmorr Airpark, which created one job apiece.

The next highest revenue-generator after Martin State was Frederick Municipal Airport, which generated $110,822,000. The Havre de Grace Seaplane Base and Kentmorr Airpark in Stevensville were the lowest, with $66,000 in revenue each.
