A 14-year-old boy was arrested after making a fake bomb threat against the Essex library last week.

According to Baltimore County police reports, two boys were outside the library, located at 1110 Eastern Ave., around 9:45 a.m. on Jan. 17 and each dared the other to make a prank phone call. One of the boys then allegedly called 911 and told the operator that he was going to blow up the library at 10 a.m., police said.

Police then arrived at the library and ordered it evacuated. The library was evacuated and traffic at adjacent Middlesex Shopping Center was diverted for more than an hour so bomb detecting K9 dogs could determine if there were any explosives on the scene.

Police said witnesses identified several juveniles who were by the pay phone at the time the threat was made. Two boys were eventually taken into custody and one of them allegedly admitted to making the threat, according to police reports.

Both boys were released into the custody of their parents.
