Children’s Playhouse of Maryland Wins Big at Theatre Festival

CCBC Essex-based performance group took home several awards at the International Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta.

The Children’s Playhouse of Maryland (CPM) took home several prestigious honors last month at the the International Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta.

Participation in the festival is by invitation only, and the productions are judged by a panel of theatrical professionals.  Students also attended workshops on the theater arts during the festival. This year marked CPM’s third appearance at the festival.

The Children’s Playhouse of Maryland, in residence at the Community College of Baltimore County, won Featured Performance honors and was asked to perform a segment of Thoroughly Modern Millie at the prestigious JTF Hero Award Ceremony, which this year honored the play's composer Jeanine Tesori.

CPM also received awards for Outstanding Dance Performance and Kelsey Lake of Rosedale was named Outstanding Female Actor.  Lake and Brad Bowers of Towson, the leads in Thoroughly Modern Millie, were named Acting All-Stars.

In addition, CPM won a trophy for Outstanding Technical Display. The group’s two technical students, Nick Logue of Middle River, and Tony Steiner of Baltimore, were named Tech All-Stars.

 In its three appearances at the International Junior Theater Festival, Children’s Playhouse of Maryland has garnered nine awards.

Children’s Playhouse of Maryland, Inc., in residence at CCBC Essex, is a nonprofit theater organization dedicated to the education of youth 18 and under in the theater arts, both on stage and off. CPM performs four shows annually and holds classes in acting and dance as well as a summer workshop.
