CCBC Essex Set for Postseason Play
The Knights will compete in Region XX tournaments in men's soccer, women's soccer and women's cross country.
It's postseason time for CCBC Essex as the Region XX championships get set in men's soccer, women's soccer and cross country.
Here is a breakdown:
CCBC Essex (12-2-2) is the No. 2 seed in the Region XX Division I tournament and will face No. 3 College of Southern Maryland (11-3-1) at 7 tonight at Anne Arundel Community College.
The Knights won the regular season meeting between the two schools, 3-1, on Oct. 18. Among the top players for CCBC Essex, which entered the postseason having won three straight, are sophomore forwards Daniel Baxter (Calvert Hall) and Mikias Teketele (Archbishop Curley).
Also, Knights freshman goalie Mike Sevick (Sparrows Point) is fourth among MD JUCO keepers with a 1.00 goals against average.
The winner of the CCBC Essex-College of Southern Maryland game will face the winner of top-seeded Harford Community College (13-3-1) and CCBC Catonsville (6-12) in the Region XX title match at 1 p.m. Saturday at Anne Arundel Community College.
CCBC Essex (8-5-2) is the third seed and will face No. 2 Harford Community College (12-1) in a semifinal match at 5 p.m. Thursday at Anne Arundel Community College.
The Knights lost to Harford Community College, 2-1, in a regular season meeting on Sept. 10. Among the key players for CCBC Essex are sophomore forward Megan Cudnik (Catholic) and freshman forward Dana Savarese (IND), who were both named to the 2011 Division I Region XX First Team.
The winner of Thursday’s semifinal will advance to the Region XX championship, scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Anne Arundel Community College. The other semifinal pits top-seeded Anne Arundel Community College (13-1-1) against No. 4 College of Southern Maryland (5-7-1).
CCBC Essex tied both of those teams. The Knights battled Anne Arundel to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 21 and tied Southern Maryland 2-2 on Oct. 11.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
CCBC Essex will participate in the joint MD JUCO/NJCAA Region XX championship meet at 11 a.m. Saturday at Washington County Regional Park in Hagerstown.
The Knights enter the meet after they placed seventh at the Hood Open in Frederick as the lone community college to field a full team against a number of Division III four-year schools.
Freshman Mary Gauvin (Loch Raven) placed 16th out of 68 runners, as she completed the 6K run in 28 minutes, 14 seconds.
Others that competed for CCBC Essex at Hood were former Kenwood runners Bethany Anderson and Anya Sankar, who finished in 35:51.3 and 44:34, respectively.
